Every producer wants to be at the level of a “super” producer but not all producers know what it takes or may not be willing to do what it takes to get to such a elite status.
Here is a list of skills that will take your music production to the next level and will help catapult you into the elite level of producers.
1. LEARN MUSIC THEORY
As the saying goes “you must know the rules, in order to break them “, and this is definitely true when it comes to music. The foundation of jazz is built upon this theory .
A good understanding of some music theory fundamentals such as chord progressions, chord changes and tension & release will definitely add another dimension into your production.
2. MASTER YOUR TOOLS
Whether you use software or hardware you must master your tools. Once you find your music making tools that you are most comfortable with than you must learn the ins and outs of your desired platform to a level that you eventually have tricks and secrets that the normal producer using the same tools wouldn’t know about.
3. SPEED YOUR WORK FLOW UPÂ
You must be able to get your ideas down fast. This doesn’t mean going into the studio and finishing a beat in 10 minutes. Its means being able to get your idea down as fast as possible while you are still inspired and then taking your time on perfecting the music.
This ties back into #2 “master your tools” because once you master your tools then in turn your workflow will be more efficient.
Also a great way of speeding your workflow up is by keeping all of your sounds and drum libraries organized and labeled, this will make it easy to get right into the music making process.
4. LEARN AN INSTRUMENT/WORK WITH SKILLED STUDIO MUSICIANS
All of the elite producers are either exceptional at playing a instrument or they work with the most talented studio musicians available, most producers use a combination of both.
Playing two finger melodies on the keyboard or using samples in every beat will only take you so far.
To get to the next level you will need to bring real musicianship into your music. This will separate you from the majority of bedroom producers and you will be able to justify your price to artist.
5. EXPAND YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES
Many producers credit their unique sound and their perspective on music to their open mindness of listening to other genres of music. This is very important because as a producer the music you listen to the most will be apparent in the music you make.
For example if all you listen to is down south Rap music than your production will mimic that, but if you expand the type of music you listen to a genre like Dubstep then you will start to incorporate elements of Dubstep into your music, making your sound more creative and unique.
The great thing about music is that there is no right or wrong answer. So don’t be afraid of experimenting and adding different elements of different genres into your music. You never know what new sound you can create.
6. FIND A MENTOR
If you want to speed up the learning curve of getting to a elite status, then it will be beneficial to seek a mentor that you can learn from.
A mentor will be able to give you honest critique on your music and also be able to teach you techniques and tricks that usually come from years of producing. Finding a producer that will take you under your wing is easier than ever now with the power of the internet.
Getting to an elite status is not a overnight thing, it take years of hard work and perseverance . As with anything in life that you want to succeed at , it is all about gaining a competitive advantage over the competition. And that means doing the things the competition isn’t doing.
If being an elite producer is what you inspire to be than following this list will definitely put you on the right track of making your dreams come true. Are you going the extra mile to separate yourself from the competition?
